　　    张贯之，四川剑阁人，西南科技大学副教授；1995年毕业于西华师范大学外语系，获文学学士学位；1998年毕业于四川大学英文系，获文学硕士学位；2007年四川大学在读英语语言文学博士研究生；主要从事英语教学、研究与翻译工作，出版译著3本、专著1本，发表多篇学术论文。

　　    《英国英语语调理论发展概貌》试图简要地阐述英国英语语调发展演变的这一历史进程，总结各个时期英语语调研究的重要成果，以引起大家对语调学研究的兴趣和重视，特别是引起广大英语教学工作者对语调教学重要性的认识，克服教学中“重音轻调”和“调型单一”等现象，加强语调理论的研究和学习，增加语调教学在整个教学中的比重，并博取诸长，探索我国英语语调教学的有效途径和办法。英国英语语调研究的历史，可以追溯到16世纪；最初是在讨论标点符号时，附带把语调提出来的。17世纪，Charles Butler首次提出了降调和升调的概念。19世纪，Henry Sweet在其著作’中已使用8种语调符号，被尊称为近代英语语调研究的鼻祖。20世纪，英语语调研究专家辈出，成果纷呈。Palmer，Armstrong，Ward，Jones，Kingdon，OConnor，Arnold，Gimson，Halliday，CIystal，Brazil，Cruttenden，Wells等人的文章或专著相继问世，不同流派的观点百家争鸣，语调研究空前活跃，彻底改变了它在语言科学中“灰姑娘”的地位。
