　　    乔姆斯基认为，《西方语言哲学经典原著系列·笛卡尔语言学：唯理主义思想史之一章（第3版）》不但要描写语法，而且探讨了“语言结构的普遍原则”，即普遍语法，而“普遍原则的发现可以对具体语言的事实作出部分解释”。对此Kretzmann表示怀疑：《普遍唯理语法》确实作了探发普遍结构规律的尝试，但追求普遍原则的努力和有关的哲学阐述在17世纪以前就已有了，“笛卡尔语言学”在这方面并无特殊贡献。
