　　    现行中学英语教材内容丰富、语言标准，而且高考的阅读题难度并未超出中学教材，但是为什么相当一部分学生得分仍然不高，究其原因，恐怕应归咎于教材的“精”有余而“泛”不足。为此，我们从英美报刊杂志和互联网上选取了两百多篇内容健康、语言生动、形式多样的英语幽默故事，供学生课外阅读之用。文章时代性强，语言是当代英美人的日常用语，可以作为标准教材的辅助材料。绝大多数为原文，个别文章按中国学生的文化背景作了少量修改。我们为每篇文章编制了检测题，学生可以借此进行自我检测。个别文章由于难度较大，我们在后面加上提示。文章由短到长，由易到难，适合初中到高中学生的阅读水平。由于编者水平有限，有错之处，望读者不吝指教。
