　　    托马斯·莫尔（1478－1535）是文艺复兴时期英国空想社会主义者，《乌托邦》一书（1516）的作者。他23岁时就是一个卓有才华的律师，他在研究法律的同时，也是一个文学爱好者。莫尔一度从政，1533年，因拒绝向英国表示忠诚的宣誓，而被关进了伦敦塔，1535年7月6日被送上了断头台。

　　    《大师经典文库：乌托邦（英文）》以对话的形式，反映了早期无产阶级对资本主义原始积累时期残酷剥削和压榨的强烈抗议，同时描绘了作者的理想社会，对以后社会主义思想的发展有很大的影响。莫尔乌托邦思想不是凭空捏造的，它是人类社会历史发展到了一定阶段的必然产物。我们有时提到的所谓“乌托邦的社会主义”，其名称的来源即在于此。
