　　    Through field research, Chinese researchers have confirmed that Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch., an all-natural plant product long used in traditional Chinese medicine, is the original botanical source of Chinese licorice. Analysis of the activity of the international licorice market from the last several years indicates that the demand for licorice production grows daily. Because of the ever-increasing demand for licorice production and the finite nature of its key ingredients, over-harvesting of G. uralensis will lead to the gradual reduction in the quality and quantity of Chinese licorice if alternative methods of production are not soon found. For this reason, every effort was made in the 1980's to shift to domestic planned production of G. uralensis in the northeastern Chinese provinces. Currently, output levels of fresh G. uralensis root have reached 1000 kg per 660 square meters.
