The Book of Changes, one of Confucian classics, states that the Way of Heaven is hidden in all creatures in the universe; in other words, we can discover the law of nature by observing astronomical phenomena and by touring mountains and rivers. Philosopher Confucius says, “The wise find pleasure in water; the virtuous find pleasure in hills.” In ancient China, hills had been traditionally regarded as the symbol of wealth, and water the emblem of virtue. Naturally, mountains and waters were painted in the imperial ancestral temples for worshipful purposes, and as auspicious designs they were engraved on bronze mirrors or embroidered on clothes. All in all, it’s the ancient Chinese philosophy that gave birth to the traditional painting of mountains and waters (or landscape painting) that constitutes a unique school in the world of art, apart from any other artistic tradition.
