　　    Huang Hanmin was born in Fuzhou in 1943， and gradu-ated from the Department of Architecture at Tsinghua Uni-versity in 1967 for bachelor and in 1982 for master. He ischief architect at the Fujian Provincial Research Instituteof Architectural Design， state-licensed class 1 registeredarchitect， executive member of Architectural Society ofChina， vice president of the Earth Construction Division，and president of the Fujian Provincial Architect Division.He has been awarded the first prize of Fujian ProvincialExcellent Architectural Design for all his architectural de-sign projects: the "Ancient Walls with the Setting Sun" inFuzhou West Lake Park， the Fujian Provincial Library， theFujian Auditorium.  
　　    His published books include Fujian Tulou （published inTaiwan）， Fujian Traditional Civilian Residence， HakkaTulou Civilian Residence， The Old House -- Fujian Civil-ian Residence （collaborated with Li Yuxiang）. He is edi-tor-in-chief for National Architecture of China: FujianVolume， compiler of Profiles on Fujian Culture， The Col-lected Works of Chinese Architectural Art: Houses of theMinority Nationalities in the southern China.

　　    The aesthetic appreciation of the Fujian tulou， a unique Chinese architecturalform， is approached from a unique point of view of an architect in this book，with stylistic descriptions， beautiful photos and expert hand-drawings. The de-velopment of the Fujian tulou is carefully delineated from multiple points ofview. A large number of typical tulou buildings and compact communities re-ceive detailed analysis， and the way of living in tu/ou's compact communities， itsdefense system， constructing techniques， spatial features， antithetical coupletsculture， and historical origins are all studied thoroughly in this book. This bookis a rare reference book for architects at home and abroad， as well as for re-searchers in architectural history， dultural relic and the fine arts. It is also meantfor tourists.
