　　    为促进“现代化科学”的发展，编者编辑了这本报告汇编。本书第一部分讨论文明与现代化的关系，包括人类文明进程的长江模型等三篇论文，描述中国现代化的全球背景，以便读者更好理解中国现代化报告的内容。本书第二部分是10本《中国现代化报告》的内容综述和目录汇编，包含了其主要研究结果和观点。《中国现代化报告》的每一本报告都是独立的，同时又是相互关联的；它的前3本报告是理论性的分析，后7本报告是分领域或分层次的研究。本书的中英两种版本将分别出版，可供国内外关心现代化研究和中国现代化的学者和朋友参考。
