在青藏高原的深处、美丽的青海湖畔南面，一所不起眼的小学校里却有两名外籍老师，他们在海拔3600米的牧区，普及外语教学，开了青海民族教育的先河。在这儿当老师，月薪微不足道但是他们通过自己的努力，改变了当地牧民不愿让孩子念书的观念。除此之外，他们还多方筹资捐建了学校的一座教学楼，为该校因贫困而面临失学的孩子们缴纳学费。在这样贫穷落后的藏区，“洋老师”扎下根来为中国的少数民族教育事业无私奉献着自己的心力，让人感慨而震惊。同时藏区的牧民和孩子们也回报给他们以深厚的情谊。本书通过“洋老师”的教师手记来讲述了他们支教生活的酸甜苦辣，记录了这非比寻常的英语教学经历，同时也刻画出藏族学生眼中的“洋老师”的形象，以及他们与藏地环境和人民的融洽友好相处。
