　　约翰斯顿·麦卡利（1883—1958），出生于美国伊利诺伊州，早年曾为报社撰写治安通讯，但随即便以作家身份步入文坛，并于1907年开始在杂志上连载第一部小说《失去希望的土地》。1919年，麦卡利发表了冒险小说《卡皮斯特拉诺的诅咒》。小说中的代表人物“佐罗”由此诞生。
　　 

　　“佐罗”这一人物形象的时代背景是19世纪美国的加利福尼亚。当时的加利福尼亚是西班牙的殖民地，在地主和总督的勾结下，当地农民备受苦楚，生活在水深火热之中。西班牙贵族亚历杭德罗的儿子迪亚戈先生看到统治阶级对原住民的压榨和剥削，一股正义感油然而生。经过内心的挣扎，他最终蒙上黑色的面罩，掩盖自己的身份，成为对抗统治阶层压迫的人。
