　　《麦克白》讲述了苏格兰国王邓肯的表弟麦克白将军，和班柯为国王征服叛乱后立功归来，路上遇到三个女巫。女巫对他说了一些预言和隐语，说他将进爵为王，但他并无子嗣能继承王位，反而是同僚班柯将军的后代要做国王。女巫预言的蛊惑、自己野心的驱使以及妻子的怂恿，麦克白谋杀了国王邓肯，自己做了国王。为掩人耳目和防止他人夺位，他又逐步害死了邓肯的侍卫、班柯、贵族麦克达夫的妻子和孩子。恐惧和猜疑使麦克白心里越来越有鬼，也越来越冷酷。麦克白夫人精神失常而死，他也无一丝难过。最后，他在邓肯之子和其请来的英格兰援军的围攻下，落得枭首的下场。
